Your state decides which NKU programs are open to you

Kentucky, Ohio and nine other states can apply to NKU's NP programs. Nursing Education, Nurse Executive Leadership and the DNP run on a broader state table of their own. Pick a state for its program status, licensing rules and the places students find preceptors.

The short version

Preceptors must work in a state from NKU's approved list, and NKU cautions that relocating to a restricted state can put your program at risk. Both lists, with the places where NKU's own copies disagree, are covered in state authorization and NP admission states.

Questions NKU nursing students ask

Which states can apply to NKU's NP programs?

Eleven: Kentucky and Ohio, plus Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, West Virginia, Virginia, Georgia, Florida, Colorado and Nevada. Florida, Virginia and West Virginia were added to NKU's admission page during the 2025-26 academic year.

Can my preceptor be in another state?

Only in a state NKU approves, and your preceptor needs an active, unencumbered license there. In practice most NKU students pick a preceptor close to home, inside the state they applied from.

What if I move during the program?

Talk to NKU before you move. Its program pages warn that a new state of residence may affect your standing, and they ask students to let their advisor and concentration coordinator know promptly. Check both state lists first.
