An NKU student asked you to precept. Here is what it involves.

NKU describes each rotation as a 7-week commitment of roughly 125 to 150 hours per student, with you available to the student two or three days each week. Students take one clinical at a time, and NKU runs six sessions a year, so you can agree to a single session and decide later whether to host again. NKU's preceptor home page lists clinical terms well into 2028. NKU recommends students file 90 days before a session, so requests often arrive months ahead of the start date.

Beyond the table, NKU asks that every preceptor has spent at least a year in their present role at their present education level, holds an active, unencumbered license, is based in a state NKU approves, works at the practicum site and has capacity under NKU's student ratio. PAs are eligible only in states that permit PA preceptors. NKU excludes a student's supervisor, relatives, partner, roommate, friends and primary care provider. 1. CV or resume and licenseSend both to the student for their Medatrax request. Returning NKU preceptors resubmit a CV only when it has changed.
2. Preceptor Responsibilities formSign NKU's form through Adobe Sign, linked from NKU's preceptor home page. The student makes sure the Preceptor Agreement is signed.
3. Medatrax profileSet up your Preceptor Profile in Medatrax, where you will later verify hours and complete the evaluation.
4. Site contact, if neededIf your site has no affiliation agreement with NKU, give the student the right contact; NKU negotiates the agreement directly with your organization.

NKU's reviewers then check your details, and Medatrax emails the student once the placement is approved. NKU preceptor paperwork covers each document.

Before day one, agree on the schedule, contact details and learning objectives, and orient the student to your site. NKU's 2023 preceptor checklist also asks preceptors to meet "face-to-face via technology with the student and faculty" to review outcomes and expectations.

Each week, the student logs hours in Medatrax and you verify the time log; once verified, entries lock. At the end of the term you complete NKU's evaluation of the student in Medatrax, and NKU's preceptor team answers questions about the NKU side at nppreceptors@nku.edu. • A professional development provision, paid by NKU after the term through a Workday supplier account. NKU does not publish the amount, and preceptors can opt out, for example when an employer bars payment.
• ANCC or AANPCP preceptor-hour letters on request, by email to nppreceptors@nku.edu.
• A thank-you letter at the end of every term, with a summary of your precepting hours.
• The Preceptor of the Year award for active NKU preceptors. Students, faculty and nursing administration nominate by November 1, and the award is presented at the School of Nursing's annual meeting in December.

NKU's Preceptor FAQ says payment is issued after the term ends and can take up to seven weeks. Students do not pay NKU preceptors.
