Rhode Island and NKU's online nursing

Both of NKU's table copies agree, so the answer is settled for now. A second layer comes from NKU's preceptor rules, which require an approved-state location, so Rhode Island clinicians cannot precept NKU students living in Connecticut or elsewhere. The state authorization page lists every row.

Rhode Island's nursing regulator carries a long name, the Board of Nurse Registration and Nursing Education. Its education rule, 216-RICR-40-05-3, deals with approving basic nursing programs inside Rhode Island, and it creates no separate approval step for schools based in other states that want clinical sites there.

One detail stands out: agreements between Board-approved Rhode Island programs and their clinical agencies must show the program takes part in Rhode Island's central registry for clinical placements, and the rule leaves open whether outside programs are covered. For an NKU student the point is moot while NKU lists Rhode Island as not authorized. AANP rates Rhode Island as full practice.

Rhode Island's return to the compact took effect January 1, 2024, though NCSBN's implementation table dates it January 8, 2024. RN licenses issued since then to qualified Rhode Island residents are multistate. The main systems are CharterCARE Health of Rhode Island, Brown University Health, Care New England Health System and South County Health, all inside the Providence-Warwick metro, which also reaches into Massachusetts.

Connecticut opens NKU's teaching and leadership MSNs, its doctorate and its bachelor's completion program to residents, though NP training stays closed. Massachusetts is not authorized. None of NKU's 11 NP admission states is in New England; the list runs from Michigan and Ohio down to Virginia, Georgia and Florida.

Before a move, check three things: whether your target state appears on NKU's NP admission list or your program's authorization row, how that state licenses nurses, and how NKU views a mid-program change of residence.
