NKU online nursing in Kentucky

No copy of NKU's tables disagrees about Kentucky. With authorization settled, what remains is practical: a preceptor who fits your track, a site with an affiliation agreement or a contact NKU can negotiate one with, and a Medatrax self-placement request filed early.

NKU's campus is in Highland Heights, seven miles from downtown Cincinnati, and the School of Nursing works out of the Health Innovation Center. Online students log their clinical hours at preceptor sites near home.

Good places to begin a Kentucky search include St. Elizabeth Healthcare in the north, UK HealthCare around Lexington, UofL Health and Norton Healthcare in Louisville, and Baptist Health, which reaches into southern Indiana. A private practice near Bowling Green or in a rural county counts just as much.

Northern Kentucky has an extra advantage: Greater Cincinnati's metro area crosses into Ohio and Indiana, and NKU approves both, so a preceptor across the river works when the site and clinician meet NKU's rules. See Ohio and Indiana.

Kentucky's compact membership took effect January 19, 2018, and the Kentucky Board of Nursing confirms it on its own site. You can train here on a Kentucky RN license or on a multistate one from another compact state where you live. NKU's MSN pages expect an unencumbered, current RN license held where you live and practice.

Nurses arriving from Illinois, Michigan or Nevada should note that those three NP-admission states sit outside the compact, so their single-state licenses carry no privilege here. AANP groups Kentucky with the reduced-practice states. An NP who prescribes keeps two physician agreements, one for controlled substances and one for everything else, unless the Board grants an exemption, and first-year licensees face limits on where they can work.

KBN adds a licensing layer for online graduate programs: an APRN precepting in a Kentucky clinical setting needs an active Kentucky APRN license with no encumbrance and, for anyone living outside a compact state, a Kentucky RN license too. NKU then checks a year in the current role and employment at the site. FNP students can learn from an MD, DO, NP or PA in primary care; AGACNP students from an AGACNP, FNP, MD, DO or PA in an acute care hospital; PMHNP students from a PMHNP or psychiatrist. Every NKU clinical runs in a 7-week session, one course at a time, at roughly 125 to 150 hours per rotation, with the preceptor available two to three days a week. NKU wants preceptor information at least 30 days before a clinical begins and highly recommends 90. Spring 1 2027 starts January 11, which puts the 90-day mark on October 13, 2026 by our count; NKU's binding dates are posted in Canvas.
