Colorado has been on NKU's NP admission list since it held just eight states, and it is one of two western states there, next to Nevada. Both NKU copies of the state table put Colorado on the authorized side for every group.

AANP classes Colorado as full practice, with one prescribing condition: before a Colorado NP can prescribe without oversight, they attest to 750 hours of experience gained in a mentorship arrangement with a physician or an APRN. The number happens to equal the clinical-hour total in NKU's FNP, AGACNP and PMHNP tracks, but the two are unrelated; one is licensure, the other is your degree.

Full practice widens the pool: an NP who owns an independent Colorado clinic can be your preceptor without a physician in the arrangement. NKU still wants a year in the current role, an active, unencumbered license and employment at the practicum site. NKU's preceptor rules list the credentials each track accepts.

Rule 1.2 of 3 CCR 716-1, the Board's approval rule, is written around basic programs that prepare people for a first RN or LPN license. It contains no clause asking an out-of-state graduate or RN-BSN program to register or seek approval before its students train in Colorado. Board web guidance was unreachable when checked, so treat that as the rule text alone and let NKU's Contracts & Compliance team answer if a site raises the question.

Colorado's student permit is a separate tool for graduates of out-of-state programs that lack supervised clinicals; it is not a general clinical permit for students in programs like NKU's.

Most Colorado searches start on the Front Range: Fort Collins-Loveland, Greeley, Colorado Springs and Denver-Aurora-Centennial, the biggest of the four. Among the large employers are UCHealth, CommonSpirit Health's Colorado hospitals, Denver Health, HCA HealthONE and Intermountain Health, whose Denver hospital is Saint Joseph.

Look inside the state first. Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and Arizona all sit in NKU's not-authorized column, and NKU requires preceptors in approved states.

Colorado does have a rural and frontier preceptor tax credit, yet HB22-1005 tied eligibility to students enrolled at an accredited Colorado college, which appears to leave NKU preceptors out. NKU fills that gap with its own professional development provision, paid after the term, plus ANCC or AANPCP hour letters on request.
