NKU online nursing for Florida residents

Florida nurses can now apply to NKU's FNP, AGACNP and PMHNP concentrations and the NP certificates, and every other NKU online nursing program is authorized here too. Clinicals happen with Florida preceptors near home, filed through NKU's Medatrax self-placement request.

If you looked at NKU's list before late 2025, look again. It named eight states until at least October 2025; by January 2026 Florida appeared, added in the same update as West Virginia and Virginia. NKU's note still invites applicants to check back for future changes. The NP admission states page tracks the history.

Protocols and Florida preceptors

AANP rates Florida as restricted: the state requires some NPs to keep a physician protocol agreement for their entire career, with exemptions for those who qualify. For an NKU student, that setup can help, because an NP and the supervising physician in the same practice are both potential preceptors.

NKU's track rules decide the fit. FNP students can learn from an NP, PA, MD or DO in primary care, and specialty time is limited to 125 hours. AGACNP rotations belong in acute care hospitals, with ER or urgent care kept to half the hours. PMHNP students train with a psychiatrist or PMHNP, and NKU suggests spreading hours over children, adults and older adults. Details are on who can precept.

Florida's rules for outside programs

Section 464.019, F.S., Florida's approval law, is aimed at institutions running pre-licensure nursing education inside the state, and the Board describes its approval role in those terms. Nothing located in Florida law asks a graduate or RN-BSN program based in another state to seek approval or file notice before its students train here. NKU's own process is what governs: a preceptor who meets NKU's rules, a site agreement, and Contracts & Compliance sign-off.

Florida's TEACH program, set up under s. 409.91256, F.S., reimburses certain facilities for training students, but it is limited to accredited programs based in Florida and so does not extend to NKU placements.

Jacksonville to Miami

Florida is large, so pick sites you can reach two or three days a week for seven weeks. Its big metros are Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford, Jacksonville, Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater and Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach. Systems worth a look include UF Health, BayCare Health System, Baptist Health South Florida, AdventHealth and HCA Florida Healthcare, alongside independent practices in smaller towns.

Questions NKU nursing students ask

When did NKU start taking FNP applications from Florida?

Florida is a recent addition. NKU's admission page, as archived, listed eight states until at least mid-October 2025, and Florida appears by mid-January 2026, together with Virginia and West Virginia. NKU's note is marked effective Spring 2023 and asks applicants to check back, so confirm the current list with NKU admissions when you apply.

Must Florida's nursing board approve NKU before my clinicals?

No such requirement was found. Florida's approval statute targets pre-licensure programs operating in the state. For graduate and RN-BSN clinicals, NKU's process is the checkpoint: the coordinators approve the preceptor, and Contracts & Compliance approves the contract and your compliance record before Medatrax sends the approval email.

Can my preceptor's clinic claim Florida's TEACH funding for training me?

No. TEACH reimbursement covers students from accredited programs based in Florida, and NKU is based in Kentucky. What NKU offers preceptors directly is a professional development provision paid after the term, preceptor-hour letters for ANCC or AANPCP on request, plus a yearly Preceptor of the Year award.

Can a north Florida student use a preceptor in Georgia?

Georgia is on NKU's NP list and authorized for the MSN, so a Georgia preceptor can work if the site and clinician meet NKU's rules. Georgia also expects APRN clinical instruction from a nurse holding Georgia APRN authorization. Your Florida multistate license carries into Georgia because both states belong to the compact.
