South Carolina and NKU's online nursing programs

NKU's nurse practitioner programs take no South Carolina applicants, and the rest of the picture is mixed. NKU's MSN table puts South Carolina in the authorized and the not-authorized column at once, the post-master's DNP is authorized on the newer table, and the online RN-to-BSN is authorized on both copies.

The MSN row is the one to settle. On both NKU copies, South Carolina is printed under authorized and again under not authorized for the MSN and post-master's certificates, so the page itself gives no clean answer. Before you apply to Nursing Education or Nurse Executive Leadership, email studentclinicalinfo@nku.edu and get NKU's reply in writing. Our state authorization page tracks each of these conflicts.

Restricted practice, open tracks

AANP groups South Carolina with the restricted states: an NP performs delegated acts under a practice agreement with a physician, and controlled-substance supplies are capped. That weighs on NP education, which NKU keeps closed to South Carolina residents. The tracks you can pursue draw on other preceptors: an educator holding at least a master's in nursing education, working in a nursing school or a hospital's education department, for Nursing Education; a nurse working in a leadership role for Nurse Executive Leadership.

S.C. Code Regs. 91-6, South Carolina's rule for nursing programs based in other states, targets initial-licensure clinicals and is silent on post-licensure and APRN study. Contracts & Compliance at NKU reviews each site's paperwork, so confirm anything state-specific with that team.

Compact license and SC systems

South Carolina went live with compact licensing on January 19, 2018, so a resident's RN license there travels to other compact states. Every NKU MSN, DNP and RN-to-BSN applicant shows a current RN license from their state of practice.

Lexington Medical Center, McLeod Health, MUSC Health, Roper St. Francis Healthcare and Prisma Health are the big hospital networks, and Greenville-Anderson-Greer, Charleston and Columbia are the main metros. A nurse manager's office in any of them could host an MSN 631L capstone. Charlotte's metro spills over the state line, but North Carolina is not authorized for NKU's MSN, so keep sites on the South Carolina side.

Aiming for an NP track?

NKU's MSN FNP, AGACNP and PMHNP and its four NP certificates accept residents of 11 states. Georgia borders South Carolina and is on the list, as are Florida, Virginia, Kentucky and the others on our admission states page. Before a move, check the live list, the license your new home state expects, and NKU's warning that a change of residency may affect program status.

Questions NKU nursing students ask

Why is South Carolina listed twice on NKU's table?

NKU gives no explanation. The MSN row on both copies lists South Carolina under authorized and under not authorized, and the DNP row did the same until the graduate copy was updated after May 2026. Treat MSN status as unresolved and get NKU's answer in writing before you enroll.

Is NKU's online RN-to-BSN open to South Carolina nurses?

Yes. Both NKU copies authorize South Carolina for the RN-to-BSN. Its clinical piece is NRP 478P Nursing Leadership Practicum, a project you design and carry out in a healthcare setting with a preceptor, measured by assignments rather than hours. Before nursing courses, NKU checks proof that you hold an RN license where you practice.

Is NKU's post-master's DNP open in South Carolina?

The current graduate table says authorized. The older online-program copy still shows South Carolina in both DNP columns, so confirm with NKU. The DNP asks for 1,000 post-baccalaureate practicum hours overall, and verifiable MSN clinical hours count toward them; the DNP page explains the practicum courses.

Would my South Carolina preceptor qualify for the state tax credit?

The preceptor tax credit in S.C. Code § 12-6-3800 rewards rotations for students at South Carolina public or independent institutions, so an NKU rotation sits outside it. NKU thanks preceptors itself: an end-of-term professional development provision, hours letters for certification renewal and a Preceptor of the Year award.
