Texas nurses and NKU's online programs

Both of NKU's published table copies treat Texas the same way. What keeps the NP tracks closed is NKU's separate admission list, which stretches from Florida and Georgia up to Michigan and Illinois and west only as far as Colorado and Nevada.

Out-of-state schools need Texas Board of Nursing approval before clinicals begin, but only for pre-licensure education: 22 TAC 214.3(e) covers vocational programs, 215.3(e) covers professional RN programs, and Education Guideline 3.1.3 spells out the process. Post-licensure RN-to-BSN study and graduate programs sit outside that approval process.

Rules you may hear from Texas colleagues, such as the limit of two students per preceptor in 22 TAC 215.10, belong to Texas pre-licensure RN programs. Your rotation follows NKU's own preceptor rules instead: a preceptor with at least twelve months in their present role, a license that is active and clear and a job at the site, who is never your supervisor, a relative or a friend. AANP places Texas among the restricted states, with physician delegation and supervision and career-long written protocols for NPs. That shapes NP education far more than the educator and leadership tracks open to you.

Houston-Pasadena-The Woodlands and Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington together hold more than 16 million people, and the San Antonio and Austin metros add over five million more. The large systems include University Health in San Antonio, Baylor Scott & White Health, Houston Methodist, Texas Health Resources and UT Southwestern Medical Center.

Hospital education departments and nurse leadership offices inside systems like these suit the open tracks: a nurse educator whose master's or doctorate is in nursing education for MSN 614L and the MSN 670 capstone, and someone in nursing leadership to oversee MSN 631L. If a system has no agreement with NKU, NKU negotiates one, and it warns that negotiation may not finish before the term, so start early.

The compact took effect in Texas on January 19, 2018, and a resident's Texas RN license has been multistate ever since. For an NKU NP track you would first have to make one of the 11 admission states your home; see the admission list. NKU cautions that moving mid-program can affect your standing, so talk to NKU before any move.
