NKU's online programs with clinicals cannot enroll New York residents: the state appears on NKU's not-authorized lists for master's work, the doctorate and the RN-to-BSN, and not at all on the NP application list. New York also screens outside nursing programs closely, through its State Education Department. Nearby, New Jersey, Connecticut and Vermont are open for NKU's non-NP programs.

New York's nurse licensing lives inside the State Education Department (NYSED), and NYSED's Office of the Professions is the gate for any school from outside that wants New York clinical time. Its nursing FAQ leaves little room: programs from other states, and online programs, need NYSED registration or approval before a single student rotates in New York. The only sites exempted are federal ones, VA facilities and those of the U.S. Armed Forces. Being in SARA does not help here; NYSED's college evaluation staff count clinical placements in the licensed professions as physical presence, which must be approved in advance or formally exempted.
The NP rules go a step further. NYSED expects the NP program itself to be registered, and it tells NP students that rotating in New York through a program that is not registered "could also be illegal". Schools can check where they stand by writing to opprogs@nysed.gov.
New York counts as full practice on AANP's map. Newer NPs, though, keep a written agreement and protocols with a physician collaborator until they have 3,600 hours of practice behind them. Well-known employers include NewYork-Presbyterian, UR Medicine at the University of Rochester, Northwell Health, NYC Health + Hospitals and Mount Sinai, across the New York City, Rochester, Buffalo-Cheektowaga and Albany-Schenectady-Troy metros. While New York is off NKU's list, their clinicians cannot precept NKU students.
New York stays outside the Nurse Licensure Compact, with no bill in sight on NCSBN's map. An RN arriving from another state follows NYSED's licensure checklist rather than relying on a multistate license from New Jersey, Vermont or anywhere else. It works the other way as well: a New Yorker who moves to a compact state gets licensed there. Our RN license page covers how NKU looks at licenses.
Three neighbors, New Jersey, Vermont and Connecticut, hold NKU authorization for the non-NP programs; Massachusetts and Pennsylvania do not, and no neighbor is on the NP application list. If a relocation is coming, confirm your destination with NKU for the term you would start and begin the new license early, since New York's does not travel. Enrolled students should warn their advisor before any move; NKU says it can alter program status.

Not in programs with clinical work. For New York, NKU answers no on the master's and certificate row, the doctoral row and the RN-to-BSN row, and NP applicants come from eleven other states. The nearest open states for the non-NP programs are Connecticut, New Jersey and Vermont.
Because New York will not host clinical rotations for an outside or online nursing program that lacks NYSED registration or approval, federal VA and Armed Forces sites aside. NP students face the stricter version: their NP program must itself be registered, and NYSED says rotating through one that is not could be illegal.
No. However close the commute, a New York preceptor fails NKU's location rule, because New York is not an approved state. A Connecticut-based NKU student should look in Connecticut, or another approved state, for a preceptor with at least a year in the role who is employed at the site.
No, and nothing is pending on NCSBN's map. Nurses licensed in other states follow NYSED's steps for a New York license, since their multistate privilege does not reach New York. In the other direction, a New York license gives no practice privilege in compact states.
