Plan around one thing: Michigan is outside the Nurse Licensure Compact, so clinical hours in this state need a Michigan RN license.

Every NKU program that runs on preceptors is open to a Michigan resident. That matters because NKU accepts NP applicants from only eleven states, and Michigan was on that list even when it named just eight.

In AANP's grouping Michigan is a restricted-practice state: NPs need physician delegation for controlled-substance prescribing. That shapes how your preceptor works, not whether they qualify. NKU takes nationally certified NPs in the specialty and physicians (MD or DO), plus PAs for FNP and AGACNP where the state allows them to precept; PMHNP students work with a PMHNP or a psychiatrist. Each needs a year in the current role and a job at the site (full rules).
Michigan only certifies an NP specialty for someone who already holds a Michigan RN license, so a Michigan NP preceptor should show that license plus national certification. No Board rule turned up requiring approval or notice from programs based elsewhere before their students train here; the Board's program rules (Mich. Admin. Code R 338.10301 et seq.) address schools located in Michigan. Read that as silence, not a promise, and confirm with NKU.
The four largest metro markets are Grand Rapids-Wyoming-Kentwood, Detroit-Warren-Dearborn, Flint and Lansing-East Lansing. Big systems include Trinity Health Michigan, Corewell Health, Henry Ford Health, McLaren Health Care and Michigan Medicine (University of Michigan Health). A system is only a starting point: NKU needs a named preceptor employed at the site, and a site with no NKU affiliation agreement needs a contact person so NKU can negotiate one before the term.
Michigan's incentive pilot for preceptors, run with Michigan State University, is over, and it was limited to MSU's own NP students. For an NKU rotation, the payment a Michigan preceptor receives is NKU's professional development provision, paid after the term.
With Michigan outside the compact, a multistate license from Ohio, Kentucky or Indiana carries no privilege to treat Michigan patients. NCSBN's compact map shows a pending bill, HB 4246; until it becomes law and takes effect, plan on a single-state Michigan RN license for any hours here. For admission, NKU looks for a current, unencumbered RN license issued where you hold your license and practice.

NKU lists PAs with a master's or doctoral degree among FNP and AGACNP preceptors, but only "if allowed as a preceptor by the state." NKU publishes no Michigan-specific ruling, so ask your concentration coordinator before you commit, and keep an NP or physician option in reserve. The one-year-in-role and employed-at-the-site rules still apply.
Not through a standing state program. Michigan's Office of Nursing Programs ran a pilot with Michigan State University for preceptors of its FNP and PMHNP students, and that pilot is marked completed. For an NKU rotation, NKU pays preceptors a professional development provision after the term, and they may opt out. Students never pay NKU's preceptors.
NKU wants preceptor details at least 30 days before a clinical starts and highly recommends 90 days, with actual deadlines posted in Canvas. Add time in Michigan if your site has no NKU affiliation agreement, since NKU negotiates it with your site contact and it must be final before the term begins.
