Alaska is authorized for four of NKU's online nursing options: the two non-NP MSN tracks (Nursing Education and Nurse Executive Leadership), the DNP for master's-prepared nurses, and the RN-to-BSN. NKU's nurse practitioner concentrations take applications only from 11 other states, so Alaska nurses build their NKU plans around the education, leadership and doctoral tracks.

Both copies of NKU's state authorization table agree on Alaska, which keeps things simple. The only closed door is the NP group, governed by a separate admissions list.
NKU's admissions note, effective Spring 2023 and widened since, limits the FNP, AGACNP and PMHNP concentrations and the four NP certificates to applicants from Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana, NKU's home trio, along with Illinois, Michigan, Nevada, Colorado, Georgia, Florida, Virginia and West Virginia. Alaska is not among them, and NKU invites applicants to check back for changes.
Planning a move to one of those states? First get NKU admissions to confirm the new address, then make sure you'll be licensed there as an RN. NKU's MSN pages also warn that relocating mid-program may affect your status. The NP admission states page follows the list.
Each open program has its own practicum. Nursing Education adds up to 200 hours, split between a 50-hour direct-care course, MSN 614L, and the 150-hour MSN 670 capstone; the capstone preceptor holds graduate preparation in nursing education and teaches at a nursing school or a hospital's education department. Nurse Executive Leadership's MSN 631L capstone runs 100 hours alongside a nurse leader in a leadership post.
The post-master's DNP's project courses, DNP 881 through DNP 884, take place at a project site and count toward a 1,000-hour post-baccalaureate total that can include verifiable MSN clinical hours. The RN-to-BSN's NRP 478P practicum is built around a leadership project, not an hour count.
Alaska stands apart from the compact, so multistate privileges earned elsewhere stop at its border, and practicing in Alaska takes an Alaska RN license. The Board's compact page says bills to join, HB 131 and SB 124, were pending in the 2025-2026 session, while the NCSBN map shows nothing pending. See RN licensing for NKU clinicals.
For distance RN-to-BS students, the Board wants two things: national accreditation plus approval in the school's own state, and a U.S. RN license that is current and unencumbered. Faculty licensing under 12 AAC 44.090(h) is NKU's concern, not yours.
Anchorage holds the biggest cluster: Providence Alaska Medical Center, Alaska Regional Hospital and the Alaska Native Medical Center, a tribal system. In the Interior, Foundation Health Partners operates Fairbanks Memorial Hospital along with Tanana Valley Clinic; Palmer has Mat-Su Regional Medical Center; Juneau is the largest micropolitan area. Educator practicums suit nursing schools and hospital education departments, while leadership capstones call for a master's-prepared nurse leader in a management role or higher.

Alaska residents can still choose among four NKU options: the education and leadership MSN tracks, the doctoral program for master's-prepared nurses and the BSN completion program. The capstone preceptor should be a nurse educator with graduate preparation in nursing education, based at a school of nursing or a hospital education department. The MSN 614L direct-care hours can happen in settings such as clinics, acute care units or surgery centers. Like all NKU preceptors, they need at least a year in their current role and an unencumbered license.
Yes. Alaska has no part in the Nurse Licensure Compact, which leaves Kentucky and other multistate licenses without any Alaska privilege. NKU wants an RN license, current and unencumbered, from the state where you live and work, which for an Alaska nurse means an Alaska license.
At a project site. You draft the proposal with the site's partners in DNP 882 and carry it out on site in DNP 883, building to the 1,000 post-BSN practice hours NKU requires, where documented MSN clinical hours can count.
