Talk to a placement advisor about your NKU clinical

Two routes reach the placement desk: the inquiry form that closes every page on this site, and the chat window you can open from any screen. Share your NKU track, the clinical course that comes next with its session, and your home location, and a placement advisor answers with next steps and a written quote.

Numbered steps. What happens after you write: 1 A placement advisor replies; 2 You receive a written quote; 3 The search begins; 4 Your request comes together.

Two ways to reach us

The form is best for starting a placement. It goes straight to the placement desk with your track and timing attached, which lets the opening reply address your NKU rotation directly instead of starting with general questions. You will find it at the foot of this page and every other page here.

Chat suits quick questions: whether a setting fits your track, how a step in Medatrax works, or what a quote would cover. If the conversation turns into a placement, the placement advisor you are chatting with can carry it straight on. Either route reaches the same team, and both work from a phone as well as a laptop.

What to include

A few details let a placement advisor start searching from the very first reply.

  • Your NKU track, such as MSN FNP, the post-master's PMHNP certificate or Nursing Education.
  • The course number of your next clinical, for example MSN 653L, MSN 661L, MSN 668L or MSN 631L.
  • The session it runs in and its start date, as posted in Canvas.
  • Your home city and state, and how far you are willing to drive.
  • Whether a different unit at your employer is an option under NKU's rules.
  • Any clinicians you have approached, with their answers.

If you are unsure of the course number, your course sequence in myNKU or your concentration Canvas shell will show it. Track and session alone are enough to begin.

What happens after you write

  1. A placement advisor repliesYou get an email that confirms your track, session and location and asks anything still missing.
  2. You receive a written quoteThe quote names the rotation or rotations covered and the work included, with terms, before you commit.
  3. The search beginsOnce you go ahead, we screen clinicians against NKU's rules for your track and introduce those who fit.
  4. Your request comes togetherWe gather the preceptor's documents and the site contact so the request you file in Medatrax is whole.

From the first reply to the approval email, one placement advisor keeps track of every open item. The full service is described on our how it works page.

When the timeline is tight

Put urgency in the first line of your message. If your session starts within 30 days, if a preceptor has just withdrawn, or if NKU has returned a request, say so and give the date. Urgent requests are read first, and the reply focuses on the fastest workable route. Include any guidance NKU has already given you, such as a revised deadline or a note from Contracts & Compliance, so the plan starts from NKU's latest word.

While you wait, the pages on needing a preceptor fast and on a preceptor who dropped out set out the steps you can take yourself, including who to tell at NKU the same day.

For clinicians and practice managers

If an NKU student has asked you to precept, or your practice would like to host NKU nursing students, use the same form and pick the preceptor option in the program list. A placement advisor will explain NKU's schedule and paperwork and answer questions about your practice. Practice managers who want to host NKU students regularly can say so, and we match students to the days and patient mix your practice has open.

Our page for clinicians, precepting NKU students, covers what NKU asks of preceptors and what NKU offers in return, from the professional development provision to preceptor-hour letters.

NKU's own contacts

Some questions only NKU can answer, and these are the right places for them. For placement questions and NKU's own placement assistance, email NKU's MSN Student Placement Team (studentclinicalinfo@nku.edu). Preceptors with questions about payment or hour letters can reach NKU's preceptor team at nppreceptors@nku.edu.

Course questions go to your Clinical Instructor, listed in myNKU under Class Schedule. Contracts & Compliance staff are assigned by track and listed on NKU's Students page, and your academic advisor handles course sequencing. On anything about NKU's rules or approval, ask NKU first and bring us the answer; we build the search around it. Our guide to NKU's placement assistance explains how NKU's team works.

FAQ

Questions NKU nursing students ask

How quickly will a placement advisor reply?

Every message is read by a placement advisor and answered by email with next steps. Messages marked urgent, such as a session starting within 30 days or a preceptor who has just withdrawn, are handled first. Adding your track, course and session to the first message shortens the back-and-forth.

Do I need my exact course number before I get in touch?

It helps but is not required. Your course sequence in myNKU or your concentration Canvas shell will show it, and a placement advisor can work out the rest from your track and session. The course number matters most for choosing the right setting, since each NKU clinical has its own focus.

Can I ask questions before deciding on a placement?

Yes. Asking about your track, a setting or how the service works carries no obligation. You commit only after reading a written quote and choosing to go ahead, and until then a placement advisor is happy to talk through your options and timing.

How is the information I send used?

Your details are used to plan your search and prepare your paperwork, and a clinician sees what they need to consider precepting you. Your Medatrax self-placement request is filed by you under your own NKU account. Our privacy page sets out how information is handled.

Can a preceptor contact you on a student's behalf?

Yes. A clinician or practice manager can use the form, choose the preceptor option and name the NKU student involved. A placement advisor then explains NKU's paperwork and schedule and coordinates with the student, so the rotation can move forward quickly.
