New Jersey nurses can choose among four NKU programs: the RN-to-BSN, the post-master's DNP, and the MSN with a Nursing Education or Nurse Executive Leadership focus. The NP tracks and certificates are limited to eleven other states. One local twist matters more than any board rule: the big metros spill into New York and Pennsylvania, and preceptors there cannot take an NKU student.

NKU's graduate state-authorization table authorizes New Jersey on the MSN, DNP and RN-to-BSN rows. The NP admission list is narrower and does not include New Jersey.

Two of New Jersey's largest metro areas cross state lines: New York-Newark-Jersey City and Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington. NKU requires every preceptor to be located in a current NKU-approved state, and both New York and Pennsylvania sit on the not-authorized side of NKU's tables. A nurse educator in Manhattan or a nurse executive in Philadelphia therefore cannot precept you, however strong the connection.
Inside the state, students usually start with the systems they already know: Virtua Health, Atlantic Health System, Cooper University Health Care in Camden, RWJBarnabas Health and Hackensack Meridian Health. Trenton-Princeton and Atlantic City-Hammonton round out the main markets. For a site that has never contracted with NKU, give NKU a name to call; the affiliation agreement is NKU's to negotiate and must be signed before the term.
New Jersey's nursing rules, as far as research could read them, set no approval or notice step for a school based elsewhere whose students train here. Subchapter 1 of N.J.A.C. 13:37 governs accreditation of programs at institutions the state's Commission on Higher Education licenses, while 13:37-1.10(c) concerns the reverse case, a New Jersey school using clinical agencies beyond its borders. The Board's website put up a security check during research, so anything posted only there went unread. Confirm with NKU.
AANP counts New Jersey as reduced practice, since NPs order medications and devices under joint protocols with a collaborating physician. For NKU's open tracks the preceptor is usually not an NP anyway: Nursing Education uses educators whose graduate degree is in nursing education, and Nurse Executive Leadership uses nurse leaders at manager level or above.
New Jersey began issuing and honoring multistate licenses when its Nurse Licensure Compact implementation took effect on November 15, 2021. A New Jersey resident's multistate license covers clinicals at home and satisfies NKU's request for an active, unencumbered license from the state where you hold your license and work. NKU's FNP, AGACNP and PMHNP tracks and the NP certificates accept applications only from the states on its NP admission list: Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, West Virginia, Virginia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Michigan, Colorado and Nevada. A New Jersey nurse moving to one of those should check the list again when applying, arrange a license valid in the new home state (three of the eleven are outside the compact), and tell NKU's advisors before any move after enrolling.

No. Acute care, family and psychiatric NP study at NKU, certificates included, is limited to applicants from eleven states, none of them New Jersey. From New Jersey you can still apply to NKU's two non-NP master's tracks, the DNP or the RN-to-BSN.
Not while Pennsylvania stays on NKU's not-authorized lists. NKU requires preceptors to be located in a current NKU-approved state, which rules out Pennsylvania and New York. Look for a nurse leader at a New Jersey site, such as a Camden, Trenton or Newark-area hospital, instead.
Research found no such requirement in the New Jersey Board of Nursing's rules, which cover schools licensed in New Jersey and New Jersey programs placing students elsewhere. The Board's website itself stayed out of reach, so treat NKU as the final word on whether anything is filed for your site.
The practicum is NRP 478P, Nursing Leadership Practicum, built around a quality-improvement project you plan for a real clinical setting. NKU calls clinical work in the RN-to-BSN project-based rather than hour-based, and a preceptor is required. You also need proof of RN licensure in your state of practice before starting nursing courses.
Yes, within three NKU limits: the hours happen away from your home unit, someone other than your direct supervisor precepts you, and none of the time overlaps with paid shifts. A different department, or another campus of your own system, can satisfy those rules when your preceptor is employed there.
