Which NKU nursing programs work in Mississippi

NKU's graduate state-authorization table marks Mississippi authorized in three nursing rows, while the separate NP admission list leaves it off.

Mississippi routes nursing degree oversight through the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL), while the Board of Nursing handles practical nursing programs. IHL expects out-of-state programs with clinical experiences in Mississippi to hold to Mississippi's standards, and it counts a clinical practicum in the state as physical presence. That means an IHL Nursing Education review, which can run up to three months; IHL's August 2024 procedures manual (Appendix S) asks programs to request it at least four months ahead.

IHL also expects the school either to participate in SARA or to get non-SARA distance-education authorization from MCCA. NKU appears in the NC-SARA institution directory, which covers that piece; the IHL review is a separate step. Ask NKU whether Mississippi's review has cleared for your track and the term you want before you book a site.

AANP places Mississippi among reduced-practice states, meaning every NP there collaborates, under an arrangement the board signs off on, with a physician or dentist who holds a Mississippi license. For NKU students here that matters less, because the open tracks use different preceptors. Nursing Education students spend 200 hours, split across MSN 614L and the MSN 670 capstone, with an educator holding a graduate degree in nursing education, based either at a nursing school or in a health system's education department. Nurse Executive Leadership needs a nurse leader for the 100-hour MSN 631L capstone.

The post-master's DNP builds toward 1,000 post-baccalaureate hours through DNP 881 to DNP 884, with the project carried out at a project site, and verifiable MSN hours count toward that total. The RN-to-BSN practicum, NRP 478P, is project-based. Students tend to look first at the systems they know: Forrest Health, Baptist Memorial Health Care, Singing River Health System, North Mississippi Health Services and UMMC (University of Mississippi Medical Center), across Jackson, Hattiesburg, Gulfport-Biloxi and the Mississippi side of the Memphis metro.

Compact membership here dates to January 19, 2018. Mississippi's Board describes the deal this way: declare a compact state as your primary residence, keep that license in good standing, and you may work in the other member states. NKU's NP tracks draw applicants only from Kentucky, Georgia, Florida, Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Nevada and Colorado (the full list).
