Vermont and NKU nursing: what is open

Vermont reads the same on both of NKU's table copies. That gives a Vermont nurse a full ladder short of NP training: RN-to-BSN, then an MSN in teaching or leadership, then the DNP, each with its own admission rules.

Vermont's Board of Nursing rules took effect on May 11, 2023, and Part 5 requires Board approval for any nursing education program operating in the state. The carve-out is for programs delivered entirely online with Vermont Agency of Education approval; 26 V.S.A. 1584 covers similar ground. What the rules, statute and Board FAQ leave unsaid is how an out-of-state school's clinical placements fit, and the licensure exemption for students, 26 V.S.A. 1583(2), is tied to programs the Board itself has approved.

That leaves a gap only NKU can close. Before you line up a Vermont site, ask NKU how it handles Vermont rotations, especially for direct-care hours such as the 50 in MSN 614L. Keep NKU's written reply with your clinical records.

Vermont's hospital map is short. University of Vermont Health runs Porter, Central Vermont and UVM Medical Center; Dartmouth Health, based in New Hampshire, counts Southwestern Vermont Medical Center as a member; and Rutland Regional stands on its own. Burlington-South Burlington is the main metro, with Rutland and the Lebanon-Claremont area on the New Hampshire line far smaller.

New Hampshire is not authorized on NKU's tables, so students near that border should keep their sites on the Vermont side. AANP counts Vermont as full practice, with one caveat for newer NPs: until they pass 24 months and 2,400 practice hours, they practice under a collaborating agreement, signed with an APRN or physician who holds a Vermont license.

Vermont's compact licenses took effect on February 1, 2022. The Board's Rule 4.1 lets a nurse work in Vermont on the multistate license from their home compact state, as long as Vermont has not become their primary residence. For NKU, what counts is a current RN license without encumbrances from your state of licensure and practice.

For NP training with NKU you would need to live in one of the 11 admission states. Check the live list and NKU's residency-change warning before planning a move.
