Illinois nurses can apply to every NKU online nursing program, NP concentrations included. The state's quirk is licensing: Illinois has no seat in the Nurse Licensure Compact, so your clinical practice here runs on an Illinois RN license, and preceptors across state lines bring license questions of their own.

Illinois was on the NP admission list well before the late-2025 expansion, and both copies of NKU's state table agree on the other rows. Of the 11 NP states, Nevada, Michigan and Illinois are the three outside the compact.
Illinois holds no compact seat, so multistate privileges from Kentucky, Indiana or any other member state stop at the Illinois line. NKU's MSN pages call for a current, unencumbered RN license where you live and work; for an Illinois resident, that is an Illinois license.
A statutory exemption, 225 ILCS 65/50-15(b)(10), covers RNs from other jurisdictions studying in graduate or BSN-completion programs, yet it is written for programs "in this State", and NKU's home is Kentucky. The Illinois license is the dependable route. It cuts the other way as well: an Illinois license is single-state, so an Indiana rotation would need Indiana licensure. Illinois has nursing programs from other states apply before they place students, under 68 Ill. Adm. Code 1300.340(n). The packet covers the facility contract, the syllabus, preceptor and faculty qualification forms, evidence that the home state approves or accredits the program, and a letter setting out dates, agencies and units. Approval lasts two years and can be renewed, with a report each year. Whether that section reaches graduate or RN-BSN programs isn't spelled out, since it sits among the RN program rules; NKU's Contracts & Compliance team is the one to ask.
Subsection (j) sets preceptor terms: faculty approve and orient each preceptor, who is on hand whenever the student gives care and holds a current RN license valid where the student is practicing.
AANP files Illinois under reduced practice. In some settings Illinois NPs still work under a physician collaborative agreement; in others, they need set practice and CE hours plus a consulting relationship before prescribing some Schedule II drugs and benzodiazepines.
Illinois gives preceptors a concrete reason to say yes: precepting an APRN student through a semester or quarter is worth 10 CE hours at APRN renewal, to a maximum of 30 per cycle, as long as the school documents it. NKU already sends thank-you letters with an hours summary, and preceptor-hour letters on request.
Chicago-Naperville-Elgin holds most of the state's clinicians, and Peoria and Rockford are the next-largest metros. Systems to start with include UChicago Medicine, Endeavor Health, OSF HealthCare, Northwestern Medicine and Advocate Health Care. Metro East students live in the St. Louis metro, but Missouri is outside NKU's approved states, so keep those preceptors on the Illinois side of the river.
