The 11 states NKU's nurse practitioner programs accept

NKU's graduate admission page carries a note that, "Effective Spring 2023," the college will only accept NP applications from a named set of states. The note ends by inviting applicants to check back for future updates, so treat the list as current rather than permanent.

Compact status comes from NCSBN's Nurse Licensure Compact map. NKU publishes no extra rule for the three non-compact states.

NKU names seven programs in the note. In its wording, they are the MSN Family Nurse Practitioner, the MSN Adult-Gero Acute Health Nurse Practitioner and the MSN Psych Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, plus Post MSN certificates in the same three specialties and the Nurse Practitioner to Psych-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Certificate.

The list does not reach NKU's other online nursing programs. The Nursing Education and Nurse Executive Leadership MSN tracks, the RN-to-BSN and the post-master's DNP answer only to NKU's state authorization table, which covers far more states. For NP applicants, both rules apply at once. Your state must be on the admissions list, and the MSN row of the state table must authorize it. All 11 list states are authorized on NKU's newer MSN row, with one wrinkle covered below.

Internet Archive captures of NKU's admission page show the growth. Through at least October 14, 2025, the list held eight states: Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Nevada and Ohio. A January 13, 2026 capture shows Florida, Virginia and West Virginia added, making 11.

NKU's page gives no date for the additions, so the window between those two captures is the best dating available. The note's "Effective Spring 2023" date is older than the current membership, so read it as the start of the restriction rather than the date of today's list.

At least one outside program directory still shows the older eight-state list. If you are in Florida, Virginia or West Virginia and read that you cannot apply, check NKU's own admission page first.

Virginia is the one list state where NKU's pages disagree. It appears on the NP admissions list, and NKU's newer graduate-admissions state table authorizes it for the MSN and post-master's certificates, a change made in the same October 2025 to January 2026 window.

The older online-program copy of the state table still lists Virginia as not authorized. That copy is the one NKU's preceptor requirements page links to, which matters because preceptors must practice in NKU-approved states.

The newer copy is probably current, but a Virginia applicant or a student planning a Virginia preceptor should get NKU's confirmation in writing. Florida, Georgia and West Virginia, by contrast, are authorized on both copies of the MSN row. Our Virginia page covers the rest of the picture for students there.

Every MSN applicant needs an RN license that is current and unencumbered, issued by the state in which they hold licensure and practice. NKU publishes no separate rule tying your license to the clinical state, but it does require preceptors to be located in NKU-approved states, so the clinical state is always part of the approval.

Eight of the 11 states belong to the Nurse Licensure Compact: Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Virginia and West Virginia. Illinois, Michigan and Nevada sit outside the compact, so a nurse there works on a single-state license, and a compact license issued elsewhere gives no privilege to practice in those three. That matters most for a student who lives in one state and hopes to train in another. The details belong on our RN license page.

NKU sits in Highland Heights, seven miles from Cincinnati, and its home region spans three list states: Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana. All three are compact members, which makes the Greater Cincinnati area simpler than most borders for students and preceptors. A Northern Kentucky nurse can realistically look at preceptors on both sides of the Ohio River, provided each one practices in a state NKU's table authorizes.

Moving is the bigger risk. NKU's program pages warn that changing your state of residence can affect where you stand in the program, and they want your academic advisor and concentration coordinator told immediately. Moving from a list state to one outside it deserves that conversation before the lease is signed. Moving between two list states still needs the same notice, plus a look at licensing if either state is outside the compact. Each state has its own page in our state guides.
