The NRP 478P practicum and your road to NKU's MSN

NKU lists 30 RN-to-BSN credits inside a 120-credit degree, finishable in as few as 10 months. The rest of the degree comes from 37 general education credits and 23 credits block-transferred in recognition of your NCLEX. Proof of an RN license in your state of practice is required before any nursing course, and STA 205 has to be complete before NRP 472.

The 2024-25 catalog and the 2025-26 schedule call the practicum NRP 478 and list it at 4 credits, and some course titles differ from today's page. Your myNKU degree audit shows which version you're on. The program page cites CCNE accreditation, with SACSCOC as NKU's regional accreditor.

The practicum centers on a quality-improvement project you design. An NKU Online article frames the work as a team project, drawing on several disciplines and based in one healthcare setting. NKU's FAQ is direct about the format: clinical time is "assignment/project based, not hour based". The same FAQ says preceptors are required.

NKU publishes no hour total, and its public pages don't say who arranges the setting or the preceptor, so the RN-to-BSN Canvas shell is where the working rules for your section live. Your own workplace is an obvious place to look for a problem worth solving; check the course guidance before you commit to it.

A good NRP 478P project starts with a problem you can measure and a leader who wants it solved: falls on a unit, discharge delays, missed handoffs, a gap in patient teaching. The 2025-26 schedule offers the practicum in every session, so you can time it for a stretch when your workplace and your project partner have room.

Line up the people early. A team project needs colleagues from more than one discipline, and any preceptor your section asks for should be settled before the session opens. Keep the scope small enough to plan, test and report inside one course; the Canvas guidance tells you how much your section expects.

The RN-to-BSN has a row of its own in NKU's state table. It lists 23 authorized places, among them Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Florida, Texas and Puerto Rico, and 28 that are not, including California, New York, Pennsylvania and Tennessee. Missouri appears in neither column, so a Missouri resident should ask NKU directly.

Georgia, North Carolina, Utah and Virginia sit on the not-authorized side for this program, even though NKU's MSN table authorizes Georgia and Utah, and Virginia on its newer copy. NKU's disclosure cautions that students in restricted states may be unable to finish field placements, and that relocating mid-program carries the same risk. The state authorization page sets every row side by side.

The BSN opens the door to NKU's MSN tracks, and the jump in clinical work is large. The FNP, AGACNP and PMHNP each ask for 750 clinical hours over five or six 7-week clinicals. NP students secure every preceptor themselves, and each rotation goes to NKU as its own self-placement request in Medatrax. The non-NP tracks are lighter: 200 hours for Nursing Education, 100 for Nurse Executive Leadership.

NP admission has conditions you can prepare for now: a BSN from an accredited program, a 3.0 GPA, a statistics course, an RN license with no encumbrances, a thousand hours of RN practice, and an application from one of 11 states (Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Nevada, Ohio, Virginia and West Virginia). The people you work with during NRP 478P can become MSN preceptors later. A nurse leader who backs your project, a provider on your unit, an educator in your facility: note who they are, which credentials they hold and which state they practice in.

NKU's MSN preceptors need twelve months or more in their present role and degree, a license with no restrictions, a job at the clinical site and a practice in an NKU-approved state. Supervisors, relatives and friends are excluded. Knowing those rules while you're still in the BSN makes the first MSN search faster. The preceptor requirements page covers each track.
