Student liability insurance at NKU: a fee on every clinical course

NKU Student Account Services publishes a class-fee table for 2026-27. Each clinical course in the online graduate programs carries a liability insurance line, billed with the course like any other class fee. NKU's public pages describe no separate enrollment step; the charge arrives when you register for the clinical.

Because the fee sits on the course, it repeats with every clinical you take. An FNP student has six clinical courses; AGACNP and PMHNP students have five each. Nursing Education students see it on two courses and Nurse Executive Leadership students on one.

For the current figure, open the class-fee table on NKU's Student Account Services site. NKU can change amounts from one academic year to the next, so check it each time you register.

NKU's table labels the NP rows as a range, MSN 650L-669L. Certificate students, including those in the NP-to-PMHNP program, take those same clinical course numbers, so the same line applies to them.

The DNP 897 row looks like a printing error. Confirm it with Student Account Services before you register for that course.

NKU's public pages name the fee but not the insurer, the policy limits or any exclusions. They also say nothing on whether students should carry a personal policy on top of the course-fee coverage.

If you need those details, for yourself or for a site, ask Contracts & Compliance or Student Account Services. Whether to buy a personal policy for other reasons is your own decision; NKU's published rules do not require one.

Clinical sites, hospitals in particular, sometimes ask for evidence that a student is insured. Since NKU's certificate details are not public, send that request through Contracts & Compliance, the team that works the contract portion of every self-placement request.

Raise it the day the site mentions it. A proof-of-insurance question that surfaces late can hold up the same contract the rotation depends on, especially when NKU is negotiating a new affiliation agreement with the site.

If you do clinicals where you work, the coverage tied to your paid job is not your student coverage. NKU's rules keep the two roles apart: clinical hours cannot fall in time you are paid for, cannot be on your own unit, and your immediate supervisor cannot precept you.

A clinical course carries more than one class fee. NKU's table also lists an MSN Clinical Lab Fee on each NP clinical course and on MSN 614, MSN 631L and MSN 670, and a DNP Practicum Fee on DNP 881 to DNP 884 and DNP 897. In NKU's FY23 fee schedule, the clinical lab fee was described as funding preceptor acquisition and professional development.

Students never pay NKU's preceptors themselves. NKU pays them a professional development provision after the term; the guide for clinicians explains it from the preceptor's side.
