What a late preceptor costs you in time

Two NKU rules create the chain. First, the catalog allows no more than one didactic course and one clinical, or two didactic courses, per 7-week session, and the 2025-26 edition states outright that two clinical courses may not run together. Second, most clinical courses list the previous one as a prerequisite.

The 2024-25 catalog shows the pattern plainly. MSN 654L requires MSN 653L and MSN 655L requires MSN 654L in the FNP sequence; each AGACNP clinical from MSN 660L to MSN 663L requires the one before; and the PMHNP clinicals run MSN 664L through MSN 669L in order. A rotation that slips cannot be skipped and made up later, so everything behind it shifts. Our NKU 7-week sessions page explains the calendar.

The delay is the gap between one session's start and the next. Using NKU's published start dates, that gap runs from about seven to twelve weeks, depending on where in the year it falls.

Because the chain carries forward, that delay usually lands on your graduation date too. Your academic advisor can confirm how your own sequence would shift.

Each NP track pairs its capstone with the last clinical. In the FNP program, MSN 630 needs MSN 654L first and is taken before or alongside MSN 655L. The AGACNP capstone, MSN 633, sits with MSN 663L, and the PMHNP capstone, MSN 676, sits with MSN 669L. A delay in the second-to-last rotation can therefore move both the capstone and the final clinical.

Other tracks have their own pinch points. Nursing Education students finish with the MSN 670 capstone after MSN 614L, and Nurse Executive Leadership ends with the MSN 631L capstone. Post-master's DNP students who still need hours toward the 1,000 post-baccalaureate total may add DNP 897, a 16-week continuing-credit course, which lengthens the program further.

A later finish date ripples outward. Board certification applications, a job offer with a start date, a raise tied to your new credential and your own family plans are often built around the date on your original sequence. Even a single session of slippage can mean renegotiating some of them.

A pause between rotations also gives compliance items time to lapse. • Map every remaining rotation now, with the session each one falls in.
• File 90 days out, NKU's recommended mark, not the 30-day minimum.
• Favor sites with an existing NKU agreement, which clear faster than a new one.
• Keep a second lead warm in case a preceptor withdraws.
• Stay clinically ready in Sentry through the whole program.
• Tell your Clinical Instructor early if anything slips, while options remain.
